Postsecondary Advising Guide: Construction

What you need to know about apprenticeships

📘 Requirements
High school diploma or GED; some allow applying before graduation (must be 18 by start).

🛠️ No Experience Required
Prior construction experience isn’t required, but it can be a plus.

📝 Application Process
May include math/reading aptitude tests and an interview.

🎯 Competitive Entry
Some programs accept fewer than 10% of applicants, so understanding requirements and expectations is essential.

💼 Earn While You Learn
Unions provide paid training + benefits like job placement, healthcare, and retirement.

🔧 Career Path
Apprentice → Journeyperson → Master (→ Inspector optional)

🏫 Classroom + Hands-On
Community colleges + apprenticeships often partner to deliver both.

⏱️ Training Structure
4,000+ hours of paid, hands-on training + classroom learning, with wages increasing at each level.

Pre-apprenticeship training is a plus!

Pre-apprenticeships build technical and job readiness skills, including communication, interview prep, and time management. Many also offer job placement and paid work experience.

Strong option for those exploring the trades or unsure which path to pursue. Programs like the Houston Gulf Coast Building and Construction Trades Council’s 3-week Apprenticeship Readiness Program introduce different trades and options.

Pre-apprenticeship training can improve admission into union apprenticeship programs. It can also lead to entry-level roles like electrician or plumber’s helper, cable technician, or security installer.

Carpentry

  • In Texas, Carpentry does not require licensing; however, the Central South Carpenters and Millwrights Training Trust Fund has organized a training program structured like an apprenticeship. To work as a carpenter, individuals should apply for a General Contractor license through TDLR. Being a licensed contractor adds credibility to work as do certifications.

Notes

This Career Area features well-paying jobs from the Construction and Extraction (SOC 47-0000) Major Group as defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Occupations on this list represent those with 2 if not all of 3 of: 1) the highest entry wages for the industry, 2) the highest projected net job growth 2021-2024, and/or 3) the highest projected percentage job growth 2021-2024 for all occupations within the SOC, with most requiring less than four years of postsecondary education. NextGen Talent uses a threshold for well-paying, entry-level wage, calculated as at least 80 percent of the region’s median wage. The most recent threshold wages are included above each Hot Jobs table. For the most recent threshold wages by region and more detail on our rationale, please refer to our FAQ for the Texas Resource Center. All of our hot jobs meet this wage criterion in most regions. When a wage falls below the threshold, it is indicated by red font.
